My name is Amo, a first year student at Princeton taking Japanese 101.
By the end of the year, I aim to be more confident reading and understanding Japanese with a confident grasp of some of the greeting fundamentals and a wide range of vocabulary (in particular daily objects). I would also like to become a more confident speaker with accurate pitch and intonation. I also hope that by the end of this year I will have a great understanding of Japanese sentence structuring and formation. The end goal for this year is to be able to at least be able to follow subtitled anime (even if only by sound) and to be able to read with good flow.
In order to attain this, I aim to go to Japanese language tables an abslute minimum of once a month (ideally I would like to be at language tables 3 times a month)
I will also use office hours as and when necessary to fine tune my handwriting, speaking and study techniques as well as to pique my curiosity about the Japanese language and culture.
Having come from a background of learning Romantic languages such as Spanish (and Latin itself), it has been particularly tricky getting used to Hiragana and Katakana as well as the Mora system. I have also realised there is a much bigger emphasis on pitch to convey word meaning (like the word はしfor chopstick ... which can also mean bridge)
Excited for this coming year! Will keep you posted.
